Ek Chhotisi Love Story: The Review You Have Been Waiting For!

In a controversial scene from “Ek Chhotisi Love Story,” the film delves into a deeply uncomfortable scenario involving a mature woman and a 15-year-old boy. The encounter, fraught with inappropriate advances, overwhelms the boy and leads to an untimely and embarrassing climax. Following this, the woman’s mocking tone, veiled in sweetness, “That’s it?” only adds to the discomfort, blurring the lines between consent and exploitation – but is this hot movie really worth watching?

In the cinematic universe crafted by Shashilal K. Nair, the boundary between art and exploitation blurs as characters navigate through a minefield of shock-value crimes. Ek Chhotisi Love Story teetered on the brink of becoming Bollywood’s poignant exploration of a teenager’s consuming infatuation with an older woman. Just like the legendary Hollywood movie The Graduate we see a love story that was not suppose to happen. And just like Dustin Hoffman’s and Anne Bancroft’s story, this one comes with a twist. Are you ready to find out more about it? Then let’s jump right into it.

This narrative could have mirrored the introspective depth of “Malena.” Yet, rather than delving into the complex emotional tapestry of its premise, Nair opts for a storyline that could be mistaken for an episode lifted straight from the more lurid corners of adult entertainment, all while donning the mask of a filmmaker with the gravitas of Anurag Kashyap.

This juxtaposition reveals not only a missed opportunity to engage with the material meaningfully but also a miscalculation in balancing the line between sensationalism and genuine storytelling.

The is Cheap Cinema At Best

The film serves as a formidable challenge to one’s patience, with its initial moments teetering on the brink of being mistaken for a silent film until a single word finally breaks the silence in the eleventh minute. In a rather unexpected comparison, our former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, might find a rival in the realm of deliberate pacing, as the film’s dialogue delivery painstakingly crawls at a pace that makes his speeches seem rapid.

Labeled as an experiment in Romantic Indian Cinema, devoid of the traditional Bollywood “masala” and sans any musical numbers, the movie carried a weight of expectations for its unique thematic ambition. However, the outcome was a disillusioning experience.

It centers on a teenage boy, a sole companion to his grandmother in their upscale apartment, who finds a peculiar pastime: spying on a woman in the adjacent building through his telescope. The narrative makes a point of the boy’s age, 15, and the woman’s, 26—though she appears a decade older and significantly lacks the allure the boy seems to perceive.

Her questionable fashion choices, coupled with a boyfriend who paradoxically looks young enough to be her son, engaging in rather explicit rendezvous, only adds to the perplexity. The inexplicable lack of privacy measures, like closing a window, amidst these escapades leaves one pondering the realism and intent behind such character decisions.

This critique concerns not only the storyline’s believability but also the creative direction chosen to portray these dynamics, hinting at a missed opportunity to explore the narrative’s deeper themes or character motivations with more sensitivity and nuance.

Final Verdict of Ek Chhotisi Love Story

You might be tempted to close your eyes, not out of embarrassment or distaste but simply from sheer boredom. What lies at the heart of Ek Choti Si Love Story is a plot that could have blossomed into something captivating had it been nurtured with care and creativity.

Unfortunately, it falls short on both counts, failing to engage or intrigue. Rather than weaving a narrative that could balance the fine line between sensuality and storytelling, the film meanders into tedium. Ek Choti Si Love Story thus transforms from a potentially compelling tale into “Ek Bada Sa Headache” – a sizable disappointment that could have been so much more than it actually is. But the good news is that Indian and, in particular, Bollywood movies moved on from this kind of films so we finally get to a point where we can enjoy movies as they meant to be.
